As part of its commitment to sharing Turkey’s artistic creativity with wide audiences and promoting its cultural identity on the international art scene, the İstanbul Museum of Modern Art hosts a number of interdisciplinary activities.

The museum embraces a global vision to collect, preserve, exhibit and document works of modern and contemporary art and make them accessible to art lovers.

İstanbul Modern the first private museum to organize modern and contemporary art exhibitions in Turkey, was founded in 2004 and occupies an 8,000 square meter site on the shores of the Bosphorus. In the five years since its inception, İstanbul Modern has played host to 4 permanent and 17 temporary exhibitions, 16 photograph exhibitions, 11 video programs, and about 2.5 million visitors. In the course of the museum’s in-house workshop programs, about 150,000 children have been given education in art. About 170,000 children and youths in 31 of İstanbul’s townships have also taken advantage of the opportunities provided by the museum’s mobile education programs.

Projects undertaken by İstanbul Modern have gained widespread recognition for the museum in international art circles. On May 9th of this year, İstanbul Modern received the European Museum Forum Special Award.

With its permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, photography gallery, library, cinema center, cafe, design store, and its video, educational and social programs, the museum offers a wide array of services in a multifaceted venue.

The museum’s collections, exhibitions and educational programs aim to foster appreciation for and stimulate active engagement in the arts among visitors of all ages and from every segment of society.

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBosphorus, where x=independently organized TED event. At our TEDxBosphorus event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

TED was first held in Monterey, California, in 1984. In 2001, Chris Anderson’s Sapling Foundation acquired TED from its founder, Richard Saul Wurman. In recent years, TED has expanded to include an international conference, TEDGlobal; media initiatives, including TED Talks and TED.com; and the TED Prize. TED2010, “What the World Needs Now,” will be held in Feb 9-13, 2010, in Long Beach, California, with a simulcast event in Palm Springs, California. TEDGlobal 2009, “The Substance of Things Not Seen,” was held in July 21–24, 2009, in Oxford, UK, and TEDIndia is now being held in 4–7 November 2009, in Mysore, India.
